Disney, Party of One: Why a Solo Trip Was the Best Gift I Gave Myself
Thinking about taking a solo trip to Disney World? You're not alone—and you’re in for a magical adventure that’s all your own. Before my solo trip, I asked myself, 'Will I feel safe? What if I’m lonely? Am I being selfish for leaving my 3-year-old?’ I was pleasantly surprised when my solo trip turned out to be the best gift I have given myself in a long time! Whether you're a die-hard Disney fan or just craving a spontaneous getaway, exploring the parks solo offers a unique kind of freedom and fun. Last-minute change of plans? We all know toddlers don’t handle that well! No need to compromise on where to go or what to ride; the day is yours to design. From peaceful strolls down Main Street, U.S.A. to grabbing that last-minute reservation at your dream dining spot, going solo means doing Disney your way. Let’s dive into why a solo trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth might just be your best vacation yet.
Safety
When traveling solo, safety is always a consideration. There’s a comforting sense of home at Disney, and I’ve always felt completely safe. Even when coming back from the parks at late hours, a friendly cast member was never far away, and I was surrounded by families. Disney’s convenient and reliable transportation put me at ease. I specifically chose a resort with monorail access, knowing that I would spend the majority of my time at Magic Kingdom. If Epcot is your jam, you may enjoy a Boardwalk area resort, with easy access to Epcot and Hollywood studios.
New experiences
Think you’ve done it all at Disney? Growing up, Disney trips were a regular part of my life—and now I have the joy of bringing my 3-year-old son along for the adventure. However, I realized that when I am solo, without any distractions, I could savor the moment and discover new things to enjoy about Disney. I was able to slow down and enjoy the small moments and the “smell moments” – there are SO many amazing smells at Disney, from popcorn on Main Street to the hotel lobbies. So many little things stood out to me that I’d completely missed on previous trips
At check-in, I enjoyed the beautifully decorated Easter eggs at the Grand Floridian. Following that, I sat by the pool, enjoying a drink and watching the monorail go by. I wasn’t thinking about what I had to do next or time restraints, I was just enjoying the moment.
I wasn’t able to snag a reservation at Narcoossee’s, but flying solo worked in my favor - I grabbed a seat at the bar and soaked in the stunning views of the castle and Seven Seas Lagoon. To top it off, I got an entire loaf of fresh sourdough all to myself, paired with homemade butter sprinkled with Himalayan Sea salt. Yum! Tony’s Town Square was also a favorite. I sat on the patio overlooking Main Street, USA, enjoying a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc - pure bliss!
Since it was just me (and spring break), I treated myself to the Premier Pass for the day, which allows access to all lightening lanes and single passes at your own pace. In my opinion, it’s worth the splurge to not have to fuss with lightening lanes on your phone or be tied to a schedule. On the days that I didn’t enjoy the Premier Pass; I had luck getting on all my “must-do” rides by utilizing early entry followed by “rope-dropping” the rest of the park. Without having to drag my family out of bed, I was able to ride Tiana’s three times back-to-back with no lines. Certain rides even have single-rider lanes that can reduce your wait time. When you get to a certain point in Space Mountain, you can tell the cast member you are a single rider, and they bump you to the front! I’ve always wanted to ride Guardians of the Galaxy, but my son doesn’t meet the height requirements. After a productive morning in Hollywood Studios, I was able to pop over to Epcot just to ride Guardians of the Galaxy. When you're exploring solo, Park Hopper is a game-changer. You’re free to maximize your day and experience more without feeling rushed.
Recharge
As a mom, teacher, and military spouse, I am usually busy filling others' cups, literally and metaphorically! “Mom, I need more milk!” This trip gave me the chance to recharge. Self-care is NOT selfish! It’s important to prioritize our mental health and well-being. I’m a better mom when I am happy and recharged. And Disney is just that for me – happiness!
To sum it up
Taking a solo trip to Disney World turned out to be one of the most freeing, magical experiences. From park hopping on a whim to enjoying new restaurants, I was able to slow down and soak in every detail. I discovered the magic of Disney in an entirely new way. The magic can be in the quiet moments and confidence that comes from navigating it all on your own. If you’re on the fence about going solo, let this be your sign! Embrace the adventure and don’t be afraid to make yourself the main character. If you’re ready to start planning your own adventure, I’m happy to help you with the details!
